The
Homeland Security Secretary, Janet
Napolitano, plans to kills the program that was begun by the Bush
administration to use U.S. spy satellites for domestic
security and law enforcement missions.
The program was
announced in 2007 and has not begun to run because of privacy and civil
liberty issues. U.S. agencies such as the Federal
Emergency Management Agency and Interior Department will have access to the
satellites but the Homeland
Security Department will no longer be involved.
